Hibiscus Fragilis is a rare shrub found in Mauritius. The plant belongs to Magnoliopsida. The plant is called Augerine and Mandrinette in French. The flowers are mostly found in the Corps de Garde mountain in Mauritius. The plant was added to the red list of IUCN in 2006. IUCN stands for International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural resources.

IUCN was founded in the year 1948. It is a comprehensive way for reporting global conservation status on various plants and animals. The 2006 Red List consists of 40,168 species. Which also includes Hibiscus Fragilis plant. These plants are only found in the steep mountain slopes of Mauritius.

Mauritius Hibiscus Flowers:
Hibiscus Fragilis is an ever green plant. The flowers are 7-10 cms in diameter. There are five petals and the petals are pink or carmine red in color. The plant looks similar to the Chinese Hibiscus. Mandrinette plants are decreasing in number and hence included in the list of endangered plant species.

There are only 46 plants existing now. Introduction of Hibiscus Fragilis as a garden plant is the key reason for decline in the number of plants. The plants regeneration factor is considered to be very poor. The flower are ornamental.

Precautions taken for Conservation of Hibiscus Fragilis:
The plants are not able to reproduce due to heavy competition from variety of Hibiscus species. Hybridisation with Hibiscus plants is also a major factor that is hindering the growth of Mandrinette. However, few precautions were taken to protect the plant from becoming extinct.

The precautions include:
These plants reproduce easily by cutting and seeds. NPCS nursery is home to 200 plants. Royal Botanic Garden, Kew is also trying to reproduce this plant by using Ex-situ conservation methods.

There are several favorite spots for diving in Mauritius. The island offers fascinating sites for diving into the underworld of fishes and sea animals. There are many sites to choose from: coral reefs, scenery with imposing architecture, tunnels as well as caves.

The diving sites can be found around the enticing island behind the alluring coral reefs. The lagoon, of course, are not all that interesting, except for the Marine Parks of Balaclava and parks of Blue Bay.

Where are these diving sites located?
The island can be divided broadly into three vast zones: the South-West(from the Morne) to Flic en Flac, the North-western part ( from Trombeau Bay uptil the islands of the North.) as well as the East ( from Belle Mare to Mahebourg.). the southern region is of course not suitable for diving in rough as well as dangerous sea.

More about sites in diving sites in Mauritius
The South-Western part is famous for its dolphins, which take shelter in the Bays of Tamarin or perhaps Black River. The ” Cathedral ” offers several caves, arches because of its topography and the ” the Rempent Serpent ” has rich fauna to display such as lion fishes, scorpion fishes and moray eels.

The North island has much fauna to offer and has interesting sites such as “Peter Holt’s Rock” etc. which contains giant moray eels and titan trigger- fishes. The islands of north provide attractive opportunities for diving. Sites located at “Gunner’s Coin are indeed worth visiting. Round Island is another popular site. “Banc Rouge” is equally attractive. It is situated between Serpent Island and Round Island.

The Eastern Island is another attractive spot for diving as one comes across varied fauna such as the pelagic species as well as plankton life. One will come across sharks, barracudas, rays jacks etc. The spectacular sites of this area are ” Roche Zozo” as well as “Colorado”

When can one dive in Mauritius?
One can dive all the year around, but the best season, of course, is simmer time from November to April. Here the temperature of the water reaches up to 29 degrees C. In winter the water cools down and the temperature of the waters can come down to 20 degree C , thus making them rough and the visibility very poor.

Whatever said and done the diver has to be adventurous and also take much interest in learning more about what lies under the water. Mauritius is, of course, a diver’s delight!

Mauritius is a nice place for tourists to visit. The island experiences two types of climate- areas below 450 meters which are on the leeward side have a sub-tropical as well as humid climate. On the other hand those places above 450 meters have temperate climate. There are variations in climate depending upon the proximity of the area to the sea and its altitude.

Overall the climate is very pleasant. A visitor can have good time all throughout the year. Incidentally, Mauritius happens to be a tropical island situated in the Indian Ocean.

Types of climate
Summer – Summer is from November to April and is extremely hot. It is not the right time to travel. The temperature is somewhere between 25degrees C. to 33 degrees C. High areas are of course less hotter as compared to areas in the coastal region. The temperature of the sea water can go up to 28 degree C. In the summer time the sun rises at 5.00 and sets at 7.00 pm.

Winter – This is a fantastic time for the tourist. It is from May to October. In winter the temperature is around 24 degree C. in the coastal area and in the higher plateau it is around 19 C. The year round one has tropical climate on the island. In the winter time, the sun rises at 6.00p.m and sunsets at 5.30 P.M. July happens to be the coolest month of them all.

When can one visit Mauritius?
The best time to visit Mauritius is during the winter from July to September when the weather is not hot and humid, but is balmy. There is less humidity and rain during this season. The daytime temperature comes down during this season.

Weather wise the not so agreeable period is from January to April when it is hot and humid and there is a threat of cyclones. During this time one has to be prepared to stay in doors due to heavy rains.

The best time for diving is from December to March as the waters are very clear during this time. One can surf during the months from June to August and game fishing will be fun from October to April as the large predators tend to feed very close to the shore.

One can make a trip to Mauritius at any time of the year, although winter is the best time. So next time you think of vacation fly off to the island.
